Children’s Barred List Checks

Regulated activity is work that a barred person must not do, therefore positions that meet all of the requirements for regulated activity require an Enhanced DBS check against the Children’s barred list to ensure those barred cannot begin working with Children.

A check against the Children’s barred list will be carried out automatically as part of a DBS check if eligible and selected when setting up your DBS check on the SPS Employmentcheck website as shown below:

There may be instances when there is an urgent business need for a new employee to begin working prior to the return of their full DBS check and therefore prior to the barred list being checked. In these circumstances the SPS Employmentcheck team are able to carry out a check against the Children’s barred list separately from the full DBS check. To request this check please select yes to the ‘Separate Barred List Required’ check option on the system:

Once the barred list check has been carried out by the SPS Employmentcheck team you will receive an email from the system to confirm that there is no match against the Children’s barred list. If there is no match the employee can begin working prior to their full check being returned, however they will need to be supervised at all times by a member of staff with a full Enhanced DBS check against the Children’s barred list, until the full check is received.

Please note that although the check against the Children’s barred list carried out by the SPS Employmentcheck team may come back clear there may still be additional information on their DBS certificate. You will not be notified of this until their full check comes back from the DBS and the certificate is viewed. This separate barred list check will only look for matches against a list of those that are barred from working in the profession and can only be requested as part of a full Enhanced DBS check. Therefore, this option should only be selected if there is an urgent business need for an employee to begin working in your school.
