DBS Checks for Volunteers
Friday 19th February 2016
The DBS define a volunteer as ‘a person who performs any activity which involves spending time, unpaid (except for travelling and other approved out-of-pocket expenses), doing something which aims to benefit someone (individuals or groups) other than or in addition to close relatives.
This means that if an individual is volunteering as part of a training course or work experience then they wouldn’t be classed as a volunteer. Even though they are not gaining through payment, they gain training or experience from their role.
Checks carried out for volunteer roles are not transferable to paid staff roles in schools. There is no difference in what would show on a volunteer check, however as there is no DBS fee for volunteers, the DBS do not allow these to be transferred to a role where the individual is being paid.
Volunteer positions should always have the position title of 'Helper in School' which can be selected from the drop down menu. Likewise, this position is solely reserved for volunteers and should not be used for any paid member of staff.
