The DBS Update Service
Wednesday 26th August 2015
The DBS update service allows both the applicant to keep their certificate up to date online, as well as allowing employers to check the status of a certificate online.
They can register online once they have their application form reference number; this is produced as soon as the application has been submitted to the DBS. Alternatively, they can wait until they receive the certificate. However registration must be completed within 19 days of the certificate being issued.
Registration lasts for 1 year and costs £13 per year, payable to the DBS by debit or credit card. There is no charge for volunteers.
Once registered they will receive an ID number that will give them access to their own online account. This lets them:
- take their certificate from one job to the next
- give employers permission to check their certificate online, and see who has checked it
- add or remove a certificate if they have more than one
Further guidance for applicants can be found here.
Employers and other organisations can check someone’s DBS certificate status online and get a result straight away.
There is no registration process or fee for employers to access and check a certificate, but they must fulfil the following criteria:
- be legally entitled to carry out a check
- have the applicant's permission
Further detailed guidance for employers, including legal entitlement to access the service, how to interpret certificate status check results and FAQs can be found here.
